Falls in Older Adults

Human Health / Falls in Older Adults

While we cannot prevent all falls, we can drastically reduce falls among older adults by enhancing visual cues -

Using light!

What We Do

LHRC researchers are supported by the National Institutes of Health to investigate the science of light and health. Using light to mitigate the hazards of falls among older adults is one of the applications we are exploring, focusing on factors such as:

Reducing sway

Improving postural stability, spatial orientation, and balance

Increasing gait velocity and reducing step length variability

Making nighttime navigation safer without compromising sleep

Where We Are Going

(1) Share our knowledge about the power of light to reduce falls in older adults

(2) Continue to develop a deeper understanding of how light enhances visual perception to reduce the likelihood of falling
